Canadian Compromises
There were many compromises that the Canadians made for the betterment of their country during the war
- Many people put off their education or quit school early to sign up for the army or work in a war industry
- Due to the shortage of gas people gave up using cars
- People started to conserve and preserve scarce materials such as food for the soldiers at war
- The government wanted to preserve foods such as Sugar, butter, milk, cheese, egg, coffee, meat, and canned goods for the not only the soldiers at war but the civilians as well
- The shortage of labor and transportation made it hard to harvest and transport fruits and vegetables to the market so the government encouraged to plant "victory gardens"
- Canada became a flight school for all allied countries as the government provided a Commonwealth Air Training plan
- War relief clubs sent packages for troops overseas that included things that would make soldiers feel more comfortable such as playing cards, chocolates, razor blades, socks, gum, sewing kits, coffee etc…
- Many people purchased victory bonds which was like investing in the war, because after a certain period of time their money would be returned to them with interest
